Tackling the trembling

Tübingen scientists have been awarded the prize of the German Academy of Neurosurgery

The majority of patients with Parkinson’s disease suffer from a slowdown of their movements. In addition, they often experience an involuntary tremor, which is treated effectively by Deep Brain Stimulation. Tübingen scientists from the University Hospital and the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research have investigated the mechanisms that cause this tremor to occur when the muscles are relaxed—and to disappear when targeted movements are executed. Their research results may be particularly important for Parkinson's patients with severe hand shaking, in whom deep brain stimulation cannot be performed. The scientists published their results in the scientific journal Movement Disorders. They have now been awarded the prize of the German Academy of Neurosurgery.
