Opportunities for Neuroscientists

The HIH offers a broad and solid training in clinical neurosciences. Young scientists can gain research experience at the institute early on in their careers and can specialize in various fields. At the HIH they will encounter a high-ranking, competitive and lively research atmosphere. The HIH plays a leading role in clinical neurosciences worldwide and offers a strong national and international research network.

For highly motivated young neuroscientists the HIH is an excellent training facility. It works closely with the Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience, which offers several master’s and doctoral programs.

Master's Programs

Students of biology, psychology, computer science, physics or related disciplines are welcome to do interships in one of the HIH’s many research groups, and it is also possible to write bachelor’s or master’s theses. Applicants are invited to contact the research group they are interested in directly.

The HIH trains exceptionally motivated master’s students in close collaboration with the Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience. Depending on their personal interests and preferences, students can choose between three different programs:

- Neural & Behavioural Science
- Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience
- Neural Information Processing

In addition to the programs administered by the Faculty of Science, young scientists at the University of Tübingen can also opt for the master’s programs Biomedical Technologies and Molecular Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine.

Doctoral Programs

Doctoral students at the HIH usually enroll in a doctoral program of the Graduate Training Centre of Neuroscience, which offers a large variety of specialist and interdisciplinary training opportunities. For professional and personal development they can also use the Career Service of the University of Tübingen.

Job offers for doctoral students at the HIH can be found at Current Openings.

Postdoc Phase

Postdocs at the HIH can take advantage of several funding opportunities provided by the University and Faculty of Medicine.

The Graduate Academy of the University of Tübingen offers comprehensive information and a wide range of training possibilities for the early stages of a research career.

The Junior Academy of the Faculty of Medicine provides young researchers who have successfully acquired intramural or external funding with structured guidance in developing their own independent academic profiles. In addition, the Junior Academy offers a platform for organizational and structural topics.

Postdocs at the HIH can also apply for start-up funding from the fortüne program. This intramural research funding program of the Faculty of Medicine Tübingen supports basic and disease-based research projects in biomedicine. The program aims at preparing young scientists for the acquisition of external grants.
